Our new songs: Glorious and Versus

These songs were recorded in Fredericia in late January with Tim, as usual, in the control room. The songs have since then gone through some thorough mixing and mastering, before both we and Tim were finally pleased. We are now very proud to present the final result!

The two songs are a bit different in character, although we strongly feel that they both have the distinctive dePhaser feel to them.

Glorious started out as a guitar riff, which Daniel had initially recorded at home. This recording actually contained the backbone for an entire song, with verse and chorus and other parts of the song already in place, but what really caught on with the rest of the dePhaser crew were the opening riff/chords which we immediately started to work on. The strong opening, with vocals from what later turned out to be the chorus, came pretty quickly from Markus. It was then also pretty obvious that this should be the chorus. In all, this song came pretty quickly to us – the core was basically done in two or three rehearsals. Of course we fine-tuned stuff and changed some things here and there, but the main bulk of the song was done very quickly.

Versus, which is a bit darker song than the “happy-go-lucky” Glorious, started out with the main guitar riff from the verse, which Andreas had come up with. This was then merged with another riff, which Johan had presented some time earlier. This was the kind of riff that everybody instinctively liked, but no one seemed to know what to do with it. After fiddling about with this riff for a while, it finally found its place in the chorus for the new song “Versus”. And probably by this time, the riff and chords in it had gone through so many changes that it was basically new riff. If Glorious is a good example of a golden inspirational moment, putting together Versus was perhaps more the result of hard work and jamming in the rehearsal room. We should also mention the bridge of this song – it was the brainchild of Hans – and according to Tim, it is the angriest part we have recorded so far. To further accentuate this effect, Tim also convinced Johan to use two overdrive/distortion pedals in series (T-rex Mudhoney AND T-rex Alberta) while laying the guitar track for this part! Yes sir!

And now, for the nerds, main equipment used during this session:

Andreas: Ibanez Humbucking guitars through a Peavey 5150 EVH Signature head with Peavey 4×12 cab, together with mainly T-rex and Blackstar effect pedals.

Johan: Fender Stratocaster through a 4×10 fender super reverb blackface combo. Mainly T-rex and Boss effect pedals.

Hans: Music Man bass (Dual Humbucking Stingray) through a Marshall Super Bass mkII head with an 8×10 Ampeg cabinet. No distortion pedal needed – just crank the volume! Mama…

Daniel: Sonor Drums

Markus: Guts and Glory

please note: No acoustic instruments were harmed during this recording!
